Talent-1-2048x818

After COVID, priorities and the value we place on things have changed. It is clear that the pandemic has turned all personal and professional perceptions and objectives upside down. The fact is that today, around the world, millions of people are rethinking how they live and work. And above all, how they can achieve the balance that allows them to enjoy a fulfilling life.

This change in the mindset of many workers, who place increasing importance on their physical and mental well-being and job satisfaction, is driving talent toward organizations that are clearly aligned with these priorities.

A company’s strategy for attracting and retaining talent must take this demand into account, observing and analyzing what the data tells us, which ultimately reaffirms something we already know: people want to be where they know they are loved and cared for. How to translate this simple and universal truth into an effective strategy?

Every organization is different, but one element that is applicable in all cases is the need to always put people at the center, and treat them not as an abstract entity, but as the unique individuals that they are. At REGNER® we have defined our new strategy with a clear understanding of the company’s stakeholders, which are the customer, employees, community and shareholders.

About the relashionship with customers, we are offering more customized products, with greater flexibility and more complete solutions, where we sometimes even integrate another customer’s product, since they now require more complete solutions.

Framed by the new strategy and accelerated by the pandemic, there has also been a change in employee relations.

Many people are wondering if they like what they do, if the projects are attractive enough, if they have enough time to devote to what matters to them… All this puts pressure on the company and from that pressure, the company must also know how to give an answer.

From REGNER® we are trying to make our workers achieve their purpose, that employees have their space to leave their mark beyond their work place. It is necessary to find a balance between professional and private life. We hope to achieve this balance through action on three important points:

We prioritize work-life balance

We look for ways to support each employee, at every moment, in the most effective way to enable each person to give their best and promote their well-being and job satisfaction.

We invest in training

With employee training, REGNER® is committed to the professional development of the people who make the company possible and considers them essential to its future.

Redefining the talent search

More than academic qualifications or traditional profiles, REGNER® thinks about the knowledge, skills or experience needed by our teams. For us, diversity is richness and that is why we are committed to it; the composition of our teams is proof of this.

REGNER® RECEIVES A GRANT
OF THE SOC PROGRAM

125M will be allocated in youth employment policies

Servei Públic d’Ocupació de Catalunya (SOC) allocates 125 million euros, which will allow the hiring of more than 7,000 unemployed young people. The calls for proposals will promote the employment of young people through the financing of more than 17,000 euros for each young person hired for a minimum of one year on a full-time basis. REGNER® has been one of the companies that have received this grant for the integration of young professionals in its workforce.

With these programs to promote hiring, the Department of Enterprise and Employment wants to shake youth unemployment figures, generate quality employment and offer young people work experience. It also seeks to help companies and entities to reactivate themselves after the covid-19 crisis and to grow with young talent.

Half of the budget is earmarked to subsidize training contracts for professional internships for young people with a university degree, intermediate, higher or equivalent training cycles, or certificates of professionalism. The other half, to subsidize employment contracts for young people who cannot sign an apprenticeship training contract.

Another objective of this line of aid is to familiarize companies with the training contract modality for obtaining an internship, since it is particularly interesting both for organizations and for young people who have to embark on a professional career. Many young people claim to have difficulties in accessing the labor market because, despite having the necessary training for the positions offered, they have never been able to sign a contract and cannot prove previous experience. In this sense, the apprenticeship training contract offers a first quality job opportunity to young people. With the entry into force of the new labor reform, one of the types of contract that can have a fixed term of one year is precisely the training contract for practical experience.

This historic budget, largely from REACT-EU funds to address the social and employment consequences of the covid-19 crisis, will enable a set of actions to provide an adequate response to the needs and employment realities of each young person.

By the conseller de Empresa i Treball, Roger Torrent and Ramió, these training and occupational programs have been designed “in order to reduce youth unemployment and, at the same time, to push on the path of transforming the productive system of our country. Because the transformation to a more resilient, more sustainable model, one that moves towards a green economy and puts people at the center, involves the world of work. It involves making the terms work and quality inseparable. Because we have to be competitive in quality of work”.

Torrent also emphasized that “we are doing it with a record investment that has a huge return. Because every young person who receives good occupational training, who enters the labor market, who gets a decent job, is a success that strengthens the business fabric and contributes to the improvement of our society.

REGNER® has received a grant for its R&D project “SMAR-TO2, NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC WOUNDS” through the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI).

The objective of this research is to develop a new generation of smart bandage technology to heal chronic wounds such as diabetic and pressure ulcers that affect millions of patients worldwide. Chronic wounds are a serious problem for patients and healthcare professionals worldwide. They pose a major threat to elderly patients, obese or diabetic individuals.

Studies have shown that chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, skin grafts and burns are the leading cause of non-traumatic limb amputation because they cause reduced blood flow to the tissue which can lead to tissue death and subsequent infection. They cause great suffering and their study highlights the pressure they exert on public health in many countries that see their health services collapsed.

The project stems from the limitations of current strategies for the treatment of chronic wounds. The scope of the SMAR-TO2 project is to advance the knowledge of new drug delivery tools to optimize transdermal delivery of therapies, which involves research in active transdermal delivery, sensor-controlled drug delivery and the integration of an e-Health platform to access real-time data and correct dosage according to requirements. REGNER®, in consortium with the American University in Cairo (AUC) and the company PULSE FOR INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS, will carry out this project over the next two years.

The approval of this project by the CDTI once again certifies REGNER®’s commitment to innovation, as well as the capacity, maturity and knowledge of the company to drive the transformation of the biomedical and health sciences industry, and therefore help improve its efficiency and digitization.

SMAR-TO2: New technology for the treatment of chronic wounds

The project is called SMAR-TO2 as this new technology is equipped with Sensing, Monitoring, Active control, and the localized Release of Therapeutics and Oxygen. The bandage is a new e-Health technology that actively monitors wound status and participates in wound healing.

The bandage will be fabricated in an adjustable elastic polymer. Several sensors and actuators will be integrated monolithically using microfabrication and electronic ink deposition technologies. The sensors will monitor key wound healing biomarkers such as oxygenation, pH and temperature, and will transmit the data to the practitioner for continuous assessment of healing progress and real-time intervention.

Unlike recently developed smart dressing solutions, which rely on passive, topical drug delivery, the SMAR-TO2 bandage features active temporal and spatial control of drug delivery and can deliver therapeutics transdermally directly into the living tissue of the wound bed.

In addition, this bandage will feature, for the first time, a portable oxygen concentrator and intelligent actuators for active control, oxygen and drug delivery. All of this will support faster healing by integrating a set of wound healing practices already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

SPIE Photonics West is the world’s largest photonics technology event.

SPIE Photonics West is the world’s largest photonics technology event. It is the symposium where researchers, scientists and professionals share their advances, show new opportunities and exhibit their new products and services.

This year’s event was attended by more than 20,000 people who filled the Moscone Center in San Francisco from 1 February to 6 February. It also brought together 1,300 exhibitors who displayed their solutions and there were many associated industry events.

Among the events, we should highlight the SPIE Startup Challenge. This competition was held over several days to help new companies in the sector refine their business cases, analyse markets and develop a network of connections to boost their launch he competitors, while participating in the different qualification rounds, benefited from the advice of the experts.

This year the winner of the challenge was Avenda Health, which presented a sophisticated laser ablationsystem designed for prostate cancer patients. The system usesartificial intelligence to guide the laser to target only the tumour. This new system shortens the procedure and the recovery time while moving treatment from an expensive operating room to a doctor’s surgery.

“We’ve had analogue, we’ve now got digital and quantum is next.”

Graeme Malcolm
Founder and CEO of M Squared

An accurate summary of this week’s event was provided by Graeme Malcolm, Founder and CEO of M Squared. Malcolm said that many areas supported by photonics are really starting to emerge ranging from life sciences to chemical detection and quantum. This Scottish scientist wanted to stress that this is a really exciting time for the photonics industry. As he always asserts, there was analogue technology first, we are now in the digital technology phase and quantum technology is next.

As he always asserts, there wasanalogue technology first, we are now in the digital technology phase andquantum technology is next.Photonics is based on a simple but innovative idea: replace electrons by photons. All devices must switch from using electrical signals to having their microprocessors run on light because photonics is the natural successor to electronics.

Its scope is already extensive. Its scope is already extensive. Moreover, voice and datasent by phone are transformed into pulses of light to travel through a network of underground optical fibres. Light is certainly the fastest, most reliable and efficient means of sending information.

Likewise, light technologies continue to evolve. LEDs are used in traffic lights, car headlights and homes; they also have the ability to turn on and off in very short times, imperceptible to human sight, which – in a few years – will allow lighting systems to provide us with light and Internet connection at the same time.

Light carries energy and can transmit information, which makes its possible applications innumerable. Its energy can be transformed into electricity bysolar panelsor it can be used to cut various materials with unparalleled speed and quality. With light, you can measure lengths, temperature, deformations, the three-dimensional shape of objects, and many other variables with unparalleled accuracy and in a non-invasive way. Therefore, it is used to explore the Universe, to detect the presence of contaminants or to verify the toxicity of certain substances.

In the field of medicine, light is used to correct vision problems, to destroy tumours in a less invasive and painful way, todiagnose diseases from very early stages and tooffer more effective therapiesthatdestroy diseased tissue, without damaging healthy tissue.

Other applications are already being transformed by this technology: artificial intelligence, climate modelling, drug design, financial services, 3D mapping. The list keeps growing and many innovations are still to come. In the near future we will say goodbye to electronics as we know it and welcome photonics.

Àlex Chenoix has just returned from Nuremberg convinced that the industry has to change even more by designing customised solutions.“No one wants a standard product, but greater customisation and adaptation of the solution to the target application. The variety and range of customised products in linear movement solutions is limited,“says Àlex after his visit to the SPS, Smart Production Solutions 2019 exhibition.

Àlex likes to keep abreast of the latest developments in the sector, to know what the competition is doing and to check the trends in motion control. As he always saysThe SPS fairis a good barometer to indicate what’s happening.”

Checking new devices at the SPS fair: Àlex Chenoix, (third from the left), Raúl García(first from the left) and Lluís Llenas (second from the left).

For three days, from 26 to 28 November, professionals in the field of digital and industrial automation were able to exchange knowledge and experiences. The sectors represented at this fair were: control technologies, human-machine interface devices, industrial communication, industrial software, electric motors, interface technology, mechanical infrastructure and sensor technology.

At SPS it became clear that there are currently two distinct trends. At SPSit became clear that there are currently two distinct trends. On the one hand, the trend towards simplification in robotics with easy introduction to robots and intuitive operation; and on the other hand, the trend towards intelligent solutions with systems that have greater functionality, with more sensors and identification, and more customised drive systems.

“Electric actuator technology contributes significantly to more effective automation and digitalisation systems”

Àlex Chenoix

Director of Marketing at REGNER®

An accurate summary of this week’s event was provided by Graeme Malcolm, Founder and CEO of M Squared. Malcolm said that many areas supported by photonics are really starting to emerge ranging from life sciences to chemical detection and quantum. This Scottish scientist wanted to stress that this is a really exciting time for the photonics industry. As he always asserts, there was analogue technology first, we are now in the digital technology phase and quantum technology is next.

What makes us different: Our connection with the costumer

Àlex has a degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the University of Vic (Barcelona) He is currently completing a degree in industrial engineering and feels comfortable talking about materials, engines, 3D printing, product testing and certification. With a Belgian father and a Spanish mother, communicating in different languages is an art he masters effortlessly.

As Marketing Director, he is responsible for REGNER®’s global communication activities and loves being able to combine two worlds in which he feels at home: communication and engineering. This is why he likes to be not only well informed but also involved in theinnovation processes taking place in the company.

That means you’ll often findhimamong the mechanical engineers askinghow the fatigue test is going,or in the electronics department commenting on the results of theEMC report or with theR&D engineers exchanging opinions about a new PCB made of a different material.

He likes to soak up all the technical developments so that he can then understand the customer better. By understanding the type of linear solution the client needs, true communication can be established and long-term relationships built. In this way, Àlex becomes the optimalinterface between sales, engineering and R&D to reach the customer.

Certainly, communication is connection with the client. We all feel a special affinity for a certain type of company with which we identify, feel comfortable and have a special connection.

How do you get this affinity, this connection with the client? By listening to the people at whom the product is aimed. Àlex knows a lot about that, the importance of always keeping lines of communication open with customers to offer products that meet their needs.

This is also the reason for his commitment to the design and implementation of an online shop featuring the most important REGNER® actuators. Against the opinion of many, he believed in the need for this new channel to establish a new type of communication.

The REGNER® online shop is anopen channelwhere customers can buy our products to conduct their first tests or trials, whether for a prototype or a short run. In this way, we offer the opportunity to have a first contact with the design and quality of our products, with the reliability of our solutions, with the efficiency of our shipments, in short, a first experience with REGNER® and its values.

After three years of operation the REGNER® online shop has become a two-way communication channel. On the one hand, we provide our customers with knowledge about the possibilities offered by our solutionsfor linear movement, and on the other hand, our customers not only give us their opinions and suggestions on the design of our solutions but also involve us in their projects.

Through this communication, we’ve learned first-hand about new applications where our actuators are being integrated and which our engineers would never have thought of at the outset.

We have alsohad discussions with manufacturers who would integrate our actuators if small changes were made. We’ve developed new designs for engineers who needed different types of actuators with specific requirements. In short, as Àlex says, connecting with customers is easy when it is based on honest communication and fulfilled promises.

REGNER-STUDENT-01

We live in a globalized world where technological acceleration is exponential and is changing the way we relate to each other and compete, rather extremely.

A report published by the World Economic Forum describes the skills and competencies that will become necessary to ensure employability from 2020, and the first three are:the ability to solve complex problems, critical thinking, and creativity.. This indicates that we are in an ever-changing world in which what can be developed using those skills is more important than the knowledge itself.

To adapt to this new paradigm, education systems are already undergoing major changes. Technology and creativity are reaching high schools so that students can have their first experiences in actual work spaces. Thus, today’s teenagers, digital natives, live their first experience within the workplace in a totally different way, they are smarter, and they have more incentives. They introduce a new dynamic, a different way of understanding design and technology.

Marc Puig is one of these students, and he has been able to carry out his internship program at REGNER®.He has designed a robotic hand that uses miniactuatorsto facilitate movement in a rehabilitation application. In an interview that took place at the REGNER® facilities at the end of his program, Marc shares his enthusiasm and hopes of creating things with us:

How did you get your internship at REGNER®?

The high school in Vidreres, known for its innovative methods, offers an internship program when you finish your junior year. There are only 10 available spots, and they go to the students with the best grades. was lucky enough to get one of those spots. I chose REGNER® because I wanted to know how the side-by-side mechanical and electrical development of a technological product was carried out.

So you have a very clear idea as to what it is that you want to do?

I am still looking into what would be the best degree for me, but I do know I would like to learn about multiple disciplines and to develop mechatronic solutions. I would like to stay here at the University of Girona, but I still hesitate whether to study Industrial Engineering or a double degree that could offer a more cross-disciplinary experience.

Investing in education, is investing in competitiveness

Marc Puig, an ESO student at IES Vidreres, is 16 years old and has a clear goal: to study mechatronics in order to identify and solve engineering problems.

Despite his youth, he is well aware that, integrating electronics, mechanics and computer science, together with a human and critical vision, will allow him to develop bolder technological solutions for the current world.

Talent is and will be a key competitiveness element for the business fabric of any country. A society that invests in training young people are making the best kind of investment to defend the present and future competitiveness of its economy. The main goal of the collaboration agreements between high schools and companies is to help students get their first contact with the workplace during secondary education. These internships allow students to get closer to the business world and also to research and development projects that interest them.

Thus, students are better equipped to make decisions regarding their academic and professional future, for internships allow them to:

Learn how to approach their own academic and professional project.

Get a start on research and development with the help of professionals.

Get in touch with the professional world and its system of social and working relations.

Adapt to operating procedures and situations arising at the workplace.

During your stay at REGNER®, you have developed a robotic hand that uses RA-MINI actuators.
Are you happy with the result?

I designed the robotic hand using the FUSION, a designing software I already knew. My mentor here at the company has helped me out every step of the way. Lluís Llenas helped me when I ran into difficulties, and so I was able to make an optimal skeleton, which is well articulated and extremely sturdy. The truth is that I am very pleased with the results.

Had you developed other products before?

I did develop a research project that involved designing and building a prototype for an autonomous vehicle with self-leveling load. The vehicle is run via radio control and moves on caterpillars, like a tank. Its main advantage is that it has a self-leveling loading platform, which allows carrying loads on irregular surfaces, even with slopes. This idea came after I saw where my uncle worked, at a warehouse, and realizing that using this vehicle he would be able to do his job much more quickly.

How would you define this first work experience?

I had no idea of what day-to-day life was like in a company. I have had the opportunity to find out what it is like to work in a technology company like this, and how it is managed. Getting up early to be here at 7 am has not been a problem, but I must admit that focusing for eight straight hours on one single project is pretty tiring. Luckily, I could get a rest from my own project by observing what was going on with other projects that were being developed in the department or by talking to the professionals from other departments. Overall, I am very happy with this experience. I honestly think I would like to keep working here.
